Milk River and the areas around it are homes to many different types of wildlife. There are over 200 species of birds, 50 species of mammals, according to the 2008 Milk River State of the Watershed Report. Some of the species include white-tailed deer, red fox, and the American robin.

The entirety of Milk River stretches across an impressive 1173 kilometers, and touches both Canada as well as the United States. The river was named by Captain Meriwether Lewis who described the river as "being about the color of a cup of tea with the admixture of a tablespoon of milk"
